Y a-t-il un son québécois? [html] / Is there a Québec Sound? [pdf]
par Francis Dhomont

This author approaches the definition of the important term “acousmatic” with reference to its origins in the sound studios of the French National Radio. The links between France and Québec are outlined and the Québecois acousmatic school — largely based in Montréal — is introduced through the discussion of aspects of a “typical” piece.

Lachine Canal: Journées Sonores
by Andra McCartney

In recent years, the dilapidated area along Montréal Island’s Lachine canal — once part of an important shipping route — has been part of a larger urban revitalization project, with industrial buildings being converted to condos, offices and commercial spaces. The author traces the shifting soundscape and presents it through a sound installation.

The Development of Acousmatics in Montréal
by W. Matthew McFarlane

Although its earliest roots are strongly based in French traditions (read: GRM), Montréal’s position as a sort of socio-cultural crossroad of North American and European values and experiences is part of what gives the cultural milieu there its unique flavour, while its distance from Europe has encouraged the development of an integrative diversity that is difficult to encounter in the French and German “pillars” of historical EA practice.
