NB: There are several sound files on this page, linked to the titles of pieces. They are all 8-bit mono 22kHz files, for (relatively) fast downloading. So they are just quick and dirty sketches which give only a rough idea of the original pieces...
My current project is called "soundwalking home", in which I am recording soundwalks from the end of my street to my house, from January 1999 to January 2000. Stay tuned for a website about this project with sounds and images of (my home until summer of 1999) St. Clair West in Toronto and (my new home) Lachine, QC...
My soundwalk site was part of the Maid in Cyberspace Encore festival, curated by Studio XX in Montreal.

In May 1998, I did a series of soundwalks at the Open Ears festival in Kitchener, Ontario.
In August 1997, I did a soundwalk with Vancouver soundscape composer Hildegard Westerkamp. Here are some moments from that experience. The soundwalk site formed part of the I ask you online event at the Tweed Museum of Art. In January 1998, I showed the interactive version of Soundwalking Queen Elizabeth Park at the Eleanor Winters Gallery at York University, with artworks by P. S. Moore. We also presented this show (video version) in January 1998 at the Kitchen in New York City, as part of a festival on Nature and Music organized by David Rothenberg, editor of Terra Nova magazine.
The Barbaric North, with Selena Cryderman , Jody Berland, Karen Pegley, Jacqueline Warwick, and Alexis Rose, was presented at the Music Gallery in Toronto, June 25, 1997, as part of the Northern Encounters Music Festival.
Swimming the Reef, 1990-96. For Patrick, has recently been released on a CD compilation called "Presence" by the Canadian Electroacoustic Community. Beneath the waves, I heard my breathing, heartbeat, pounding surf. The beautiful fish and coral were beyond my ears. This piece transforms their spoken names: tomtate, angelfish, barracuda, fan, brain... to mimic their movements, forms, and colours.
Coiled Chalk Circle has recently been released on the CD noise compilation Screw by Entartete Kunst, a London, Ont. recording company. In the old stories, a wise judge calls for each of the parents who claim a child to take an arm and pull. When one lets go, the judge declares that this is the real parent, who would rather lose than see the child torn apart. The new stories are not so clear and wise. Counsellors' questions, court assessments, custody hearings, bring us back into the circle again and again. Parents who let go live with pain, loss, and often community condemnation. Dedicated with hope to Sian and Daniel.
River Writing, For Donna, with words singing between boats. The river and writing sounds were recorded at Donna's cottage, on the Crowe River, in Southern Ontario. Vocals are from journal entries that day. This piece was broadcast by ORF Kunstradio, Vienna, Austria, as part of the Rivers and Bridges audio project, coordinated by Jocelyn Robert (Quebec) and Janos Sugar (Budapest). It was also included in the ExStatic audio project with performances in several Australian arts festivals. For more info on ExStatic, contact: Terrance McDermott.
